Scale Model of the Universe

A mobile constructed of 3 parts hung from the ceiling by fishing line and a fly. The bologna sculpture stays relatively static over time, while the orange slowly decomposes.

9 Months and Half in a Window Closing

After an earlier project involving a fertility test showed that my sperm count was in the “extremely low” category, I saved my semen for 9 months and froze it into the shape of a baby. That sculpture was installed on top of a baby blanket at the outdoor gallery Terraformer, in Chicago, where it remained for 8 days until it melted.

Small bits of melted clay (stuck to the frozen sperm from the clay mold used), and the melted semen itself, left behind this shape of the baby on the fabric, which has since been sealed in resin. Much in the way parents will bronze baby shoes, this is a sculpture of and a memento to my unborn child.

Chasing a Fantasy (29:23)

Chasing a Fantasy (29:23) comes from a series in which images are made by shooting long exposures of a monitor with video of internet porn playing on it. Each photo is a single video, with the length of the exposure determined by the length of the video. The title of the photograph is the name of the video as it is listed on its respective site. The photos are shot onto film using a 4×5 view camera, allowing the lines of the screen to be highly visible upon a closer look.

Some of the other pieces in this series include “That Is How We Fuck (6:04)”, “Chasing a Fantasy (29:23)”, and “Cruel Mom Fucked Son (8:01)”.

Silky Sheer Energy

This is one of five ephemeral sculptures that were created and documented in my studio. They contain the seeds of wild flowers sprinkled throughout them. Each day, for several weeks, I returned to spray the sculpture with water and take photos—monitoring their decay and their potential for growth. These photos are currently being compiled for a book of the series, yet to be titled.

Untitled (Breadboxes)

Untitled (Breadboxes) is a group of eight sculptures that contain loaves of bread in a plexiglass box, encased in resin. Since first being completed, the extent of decomposition within the resin has visibly changed for some of the pieces while not for others.

209 Hits to an Object Immovable, Impressionable

In July of 2012, I attended the Classic Session of the Harold Arts Residency, a two-week stay in rural Chesterhill, Ohio. There I purchased two brass knuckles (sold as paper weights) from the local gas station / liquor store / sex, and weapons shop, and ventured down one of the many paths on the Harold Arts property.

After locating an especially exquisite Beach Tree, I punched it while wearing the paper weights until my hands and muscles were too exhausted and sore to continue. The tree was then doused with alcohol to ritualistically cleanse its wounds.

While I also created a video of this action, I was primarily interested in imprinting a tree with the skulls found on the paper weights as a process of object making, using only materials readily available from my location. The impressions left on the tree will remain there for years to come, and upon close inspection, be visible to all future residents who venture down this same path.
